Nesbitt Cup Doubles Tennis Invitational
The tournament evolved from the Mid-Winter Tennis Invitational first hosted in 1923 and won by none other than the Babe Ruth of tennis, Big Bill Tilden. Through the years, the greatest players of their era used this tournament as a tune up for the U.S. National Indoors held in Philadelphia a couple of weeks following.
Up until the late 60s, the Grand Slam tournaments and most others were closed to professional players. Then in 1968 the major tennis tournaments became “Open,” meaning pros as well as amateurs could participate. In 1973, the Bobby Riggs – Margaret Court/Billie Jean King Battle of the Sexes televised tennis matches captured the country’s imagination and the tennis boom arrived. Alas, so too did big money. Players no longer would come to tournaments such as ours simply for the fun of it; there was big money to be made! Our Mid-Winter Tennis Invitational tournament shriveled and ended.
After a few of years of “mourning,” our Club reconstituted the tournament into its present form with a new name and with the goal of preserving an event where the socializing among friends was as important as the competition.
